We talked about how to handle multiple timelines, signaling the reader about flashbacks and internal dialogue with judicious use of italics (contrary to what the late, great George V. Higgins did — or Cormac McCarthy, for that matter) and the importance of being ruthless about cutting a well-written character or passage if it doesn’t serve the overall story.
